February 25, 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of Bubblegum Crisis’ original release in Japan! So to celebrate, I’ve invited Sean of Zimmerit.moe to talk all about it: the many western influences that inspired it, why it’s label of “cyberpunk” is a bit of a misnomer, and how some aspects of it were surprisingly progressive for an 80s OAV.

  1. Great episode. On the way home last night I pulled up my soundtracks on my iPhone and listened as the bus made it's route. Perhaps tonight I'll do the Streets of Fire soundtrack.

  2. You know, I've been a fan of Bubblegum Crisis since it came out. Last week I was watching Blade Runner again, and it dawned on me that the blonde wig BGC Priss wears on stage in the first episode is the same blonde wig Replicant Priss (played by Daryl Hannah) in Blade Runner wears. I feel dense for not making that connection before. The names Priss and Leon are both from Blade Runner, of course.

BGC also features an early role by Megumi Hayashibara as one of the sexaroids who buys it trying to escape in episode 5.
